Nikon MX Sensor - MX as in Medium Format

September 10th, 2008 by Xof

Normally, I am very cautious about rumors but I have no problem believing Nikon will “one day” release a MX Format Sensor for Digital Rangefinder (41+MP) to compete with Mamiya and Hasselblad in the medium format market.

According this rumor, Nikon would release a 48×48mm MX sensor delivering 48MP at 0.5x crop ratio (DX=1.5x & FX=1.0X)

If the rumor is true, it will not just be BIG, it will be HUUUUGE!!

And the fact that they alluded at both the WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographer International) convention and in Rangefinder Mag makes me think that we might be in for a HUGE surprise indeed!

The real question is will we be able to use DX and FX lenses with a MX mount adapter?! That would be awesome!!!

Maybe with more manufacturers making medium format digitals, you might FINALLY be able to get one for less than the price of a new midsized sedan. And remember that if Nikon makes one, Canon can’t be too far behind (if it is not already in the works). In fact, when you consider that the coming Canon 5D II now just about equals the 1D in terms of resolution, the ONLY way they could improve the 1D is to go medium format.
