Wanna steal my Mac PUNK?!?

May 25th, 2006 by Xof

Undercover

The last thing I want if one of my Macs get stolen, is for the thieves to be able to use it, or at least let them use it long enough so the police can find them!

Undercover is a smart theft-recovery software that will send out a S.O.S. to a DB, take a picture of the thieve, simulate a screen failure and prevent your Mac from been formatted without knowing your firmware password!!

Let’s say your computer has been stolen, simply contact Orbicule so they can trigger the program and start the recovery. The aim is to locate the computer and get as much data on the thieve as possible.

If you use, like I do, a software (like Little Snitch) to monitor your Internet traffic, it is important that you configure it correctly for Undercover will transmit the IP address of the user back to Orbicule.

Even better, if your Mac has a built-in or external iSight, Undercover will transmit pictures of the thief and his surroundings every 6 minutes!

The procedure is independent from your location: all you need to send is the Undercover unique ID and a copy of the police report. They contact the police…

If the recovery fails, you can decide to have Orbicule to simulate a hardware failure, in this case, gradually making the screen darker until it becomes unusable.

If the thieve doesn’t bring the computer back to an Apple store to fix this problem, or doesn’t try to sell it, Undercover has one more trick up its sleeve… a full-screen message alerting the reseller (or someone who bought the Mac from the thief) that the Mac has been stolen, that it has become unusable and that it needs to be returned as soon as possible!!

Undercover won’t affect your Mac’s performance for it has a very small memory footprint and it consumes almost no CPU resources and is very easy to install.

All this for $29.99 !! No need to tell you both my Macs are now Undercover!!

Nikon Capture NX

May 17th, 2006 by Xof

Finally the first screenshot of the long awaited Nikon Capture NX.
I like the Selective tools - something that’s been missing in LR so far…

Also the “U Point Technology” for selective image editing!

Nikon Capture NX availability would be around July 2006. I’ll do a full review as soon as I can get my hands on it :-D

TiVo for you Mac

May 3rd, 2006 by Xof

TiVo Mac Universal
TiVo updates the Mac Desktop software for the Macintosh OS X, v10.3 and later and it’s now Universal binary.

It’s probably not the big revolution (still no TiVoToGo :-() you were waiting for, but at least Mac users are not being completely forgotten…

Nevertheless, Macs can now send MPEG2 video to TiVo by activating hidden features! Getting very cool!
